Vonnegut was present everywhere for new and old fans of his important and influential work.
*UPDATE: What a success! We had a fantastic group of bands, actors and artists as well as a high-energy audience that closed the loft at 208 down at 4am. Vonnegut was present everywhere for new and old fans of his important and influential work. It still stings to know we’ll never read anything new from him, but it was reassuring to see so many people celebrating in his honor.
Monuments will continue to sing his praises again this week:
Friday, November 16th

On November 10th, 2007, starting at 7pm we will spend the evening celebrating and remembering the unique vision of Kurt Vonnegut Jr. with a selection of music, art, and film inspired by the meta-fiction king.
Mr. Vonnegut died recently after a fall in his home, April 11th, 2007. So it...(you know the rest)…
We’ve all read something by Vonnegut at some point, and may remember that we loved it - during this Evening of Champions we’ll try to remember why.
Frankly, I’m sure if he thought it was possible to roll in his grave, he would at the notion of anyone “keeping his memory alive.” My guess would be he’s content being dead because he doesn’t know any better. From Cat’s Cradle:
“We do, doodley do, doodley do, doodley do,
What we must, muddily must, muddily must, muddily must;
Muddily do, muddily do, muddily do, muddily do,
Until we bust, bodily bust, bodily bust, bodily bust.”
No, we don’t feel the need to resurrect him, just to remember some of the beautiful and difficult ideas he wrote about.
Held in an amazing studio/performance space called 208 in Dumbo, Brooklyn, and run by the brains behind Casa Nova Studios, this event offers an alternative to the normally constraining, dingy, basement configuration we’re all used to with New York venues, and instead offers a more relaxed environment with unforgettable character (and a bargain bar):

We all truly believe it is your destiny to be there. No, seriously. SERIOUSLY!

I’ll be thinking about you and the memory of one of the greatest writers of an era. As a quotes lover, here is another of my favorites by him, “Laughter and tears are both responses to frustration and exhaustion. I myself prefer to laugh, since there is less cleaning up to do afterward.”
