Because they are operating from a competitive instead of creative perspective, the record companies are unable to effectively deal with the curve-balls life has been throwing them.
Hey guys, I’ve got it! Sue a single mom! Win battle! Lose war! Dig grave!
So the record companies, and we’re naming names*, have finally succeeded in suing one of their customers—a single mom in Duluth, Minnesota. Gosh, for a business these record companies sure are BAD for business. But whatevs, I think I’ve spotted an asteroid in the distance—you know, the asteroid that killed off the dinosaurs! The joke ain’t that great, but cut me some slack. My point is: REJOICE! As the record companies increasingly alienate their customers (who are really OUR customers and OUR community) the opportunities increase for artists to deal and communicate more effectively and efficiently with their audiences. The vacuum has landed people, and who better to address it than us, the creative people of the world!
Because they are operating from a competitive instead of creative perspective, the record companies are unable to effectively deal with the curve-balls life has been throwing them. They grab at straws. So those of us who are able to maintain a creative viewpoint will be able to see the great opportunities available to us right now. As we artists steer our creative powers for just a moment toward the business of music, we’ll begin to see (heck, we’re already seeing) a true revival of the business based on the only thing that really matters anyway: an authentic relationship between the artist and the audience.
Amen!
(*Silly record companies include SonyBMG, Arista, Interscope, UMG Recordings, Capitol and Warner Bros.)
